Will you get

to go on holiday this summer

?

"Because it has been so quiet I'm taking a full week off for the first time in three years.

I'm the cult of the Jolly Vintner and customers expect to see me . When I disappear turnover drops dramatically."

Rory Stapleton

The Jolly Vintner, Tiverton

Devon

" It's only myself and my husband running the shop and it's our fourth year of trading. We get one day off a year - Christmas

Day. But it's part of our plan for the future . We're planning on early retirement."

Jan Hancock

Rob & Jan's Off -licence

Boston, Lincs

" Usually I get away at some point in the summer but getting the staff is tough this year. I'm planning a winter holiday when it's quieter

."

Taher Hanzet

Hops & Grapes , Southampton

" We normally do get a chance to get away.

I've got people I can trust to look after the shop

which is lucky."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
