MP proposes alcohol ad ban

Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho has tabled an early day motion calling for a ban on alcohol advertising shown on television before 9pm and in cinemas before films without an 18 certificate. The EDM, tabled on July 17, has so far attracted 23 signatures. Those who have signed the motion say they are "deeply concerned with the growing social and health harms through increased under-age alcohol consumption".

New SA Brain appointment

Welsh brewer SA Brain has appointed Paul Harvey as take-home account manager. Harvey was previously in a national accounts role with First Drinks Brands and will have responsibility for developing Brain's regional and national take-home business in his new role, with particular focus on the SA Gold brand.

Isake appoints Coe Vintners

The saké brand Isake has appointed Coe Vintners as its national UK distributor. Isake said the move would free up its own

team to act as "sake ambassadors", carrying out education programmes and PR behind the brand, as well as sourcing new products from Japan.

Waitrose promoting Oz wines

Australia is in the spotlight in Waitrose's latest in-store promotion. Running from Aug 11 to Sept 11, shoppers can save up to 33 per cent on wines such as Barramundi Semillon/Chardonnay 2005 (down to £3.59 from £4.79) and Peter Lehmann Tempranillo Barossa 2005 (£7.99-£5.99). Also reduced for the period is Chile's Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2004/05 Central Valley (£5.99-£4.79).

Drinks taken from youths

Police in a West Sussex town have seized 230 litres of alcohol from youths as part of a crackdown against under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour. The drink was seized over the course of a month as part of Operation Respect in and around Littlehampton. The haul included 382 and 136 bottles of lager, 14 2-litre bottles of cider, 11 litres of wine, 11 bottles of RTDs, five bottles of vodka and a bottle of tequila, worth a combined £800.

Betting on football and rugby

Carlsberg UK has teamed up with to give Carlsberg and Tetley's drinkers a free £25 bet in the upcoming England football internationals, Euro 2008 qualifiers and the Rugby World Cup. The promotion will run on packs of Carlsberg, Carlsberg Export, Tetley's Smoothflow and Tetley's Original from Aug 13.

Reasons to be cheerful

I would like to think my outlook on things is generally optimistic. Perhaps that’s a natural consequence of working with something designed to give pleasure. But recently it has become increasingly difficult to ignore a creeping sense of negativity pervading the British wine trade.
