Much in store for new Adnams venture

Adnams has opened its fifth wine shop as part of expansion plans for the wine section of the business.

The new Cellar & Kitchen

store opened in Harleston, Norfolk, on July 23 and is stocked with 400 wines as well as essential kitchenware.

The opening of the Harleston store follows the success of two in Suffolk and one in Norfolk. A fourth store opened in Stamford, Lincolnshire, in May

this year.

Retail director Rupert Farquharson said: "The Cellar & Kitchen

store has been hugely successful in Southwold for many years

and since 2005 we have taken the concept to Holkham, Woodbridge, Stamford and now Harleston. Our plan is to expand the Adnams Cellar & Kitchen store concept into several more hand-picked locations."

Farquharson said the company plans to open more shops in areas which attract tourists and second home


He added: "The key seems to be attracting the high-end consumer who is looking for interesting wines that they might not find in the supermarket. This seems to be a winning formula for Adnams, the success of the Cellar & Kitchen stores is reliant on finding the most suitable location."

Wines stocked in store are selected by Adnams senior wine buyer Alastair Marshall and the Southwold-based

wine-buying team.

Harleston store manager

Alex Clack said: "Alastair's buying philosophy is based on buying wines he truly loves to drink

- most are from small-scale producers, are made in an environmentally respectful manner

and will certainly not be found in supermarkets."

Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
