chef and owner of LeáGavroche restaurant , has been named Beer Drinker of the Year 2007 by the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group at Westminster, after his restaurant created a beer list . Previous winners include Prince Charles, Michael Parkinson and DarrenáGough.

Pierhead Purchasing is celebrating

Australian ale Coopers appear ing in Big Brother during an Aussie-themed dinner party for the housemates. Programme makers blacked out the bottle's main label to avoid advertising the brand, but left its distinctive neck label, featuring a red kangaroo, on display.

The Society of Independent Brewers is taking a stand at the Great British Beer Festival for the first time. It runs from Aug 7-11 at Olympia.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
