Petrassi joins Tesco

Tesco has employed Pierpaulo Petrassi as senior product development manager. Petrassi - formerly of Waverley TBS - will start his new role in October with responsibility for selecting wines from Australia, New Zealand and Italy. The retailer is putting 370 new wines on its shelves on Aug 13 in its latest category review.

Devon brewer scoops award

O'Hanlon's Port Stout has been awarded best bottle-conditioned beer at this year's Great British Beer Festival. Silver medals were awarded to Titanic Stout and Wye Valley Dorothy Goodbody's Wholesome Stout. Wapping Baltic Gold was given a bronze medal. Shropshire beer Hobsons Mild was named Champion Beer of Britain.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
