Berry Bros launches virtual wine school

15 August, 2007

Berry Bros has launched its Virtual Wine School with the release of the first of six free video podcasts.

The video casts – hosted by Rebecca Lamont, who runs Berry’s Wine School – are free and aimed at wine enthusiasts who want to increase their understanding and appreciation of wine.

Lamont said: “The six episodes focus on the world’s finest grape varieties and the different styles produced in the major regions of the world. We cover basic tasting techniques, putting words to wine and try to find out what you like and why.” The course also touches on matching food with wine.

The first lesson can be downloaded from http://www.bbr.com/virtualwineschool – the remaining five will be released at fortnightly intervals over the next 10 weeks.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
