Online shopping boom spurs website launches

growing number of drink specialists are launching websites as more consumers turn to the internet.

Organic specialist Organico went live with a new website three weeks ago in a bid to capitalise on the increasing popularity of online shopping. Users can search for wines by country, region, vineyard, grape variety, or medal winners at or gani.co.uk.

Sales manager James Dixon said the website had been set up "by necessity", after visitors to the shop - which is based in Ambleside in the Lake District - said they wanted to be able to buy the wines when they returned home.

"It's been pretty successful already. We did it because of public demand for our wines and and we've got high hopes for the site," Dixon said.

Spirits haven Gerry's in Soho is experiencing a surge in online sales after launching its website at the end of July. Owner Alan Daly said the site was set up to supplement high street trade.

Berkmann Wine Cellars is relaunching its website - berkmann.co.uk - at the end of the month. It will feature a searchable database of the entire Berkmann port­folio, a downloadable image bank, tasting notes, and information on wine producers.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
