Sugar-free RTDs a first for the UK

A businesswoman from north east England has created the UK's first sugar-free RTD.

Lorraine Griffiths, who came up with the idea while working in the bar and club industry, has invented Baby Blue and Baby Pink sugar-free drinks as an alternative to mainstream RTDs such as WKD and Smirnoff Ice.

"More and more women were asking about the amount of sugar in drinks so it seemed only logical to find them an alternative," she said.

Griffiths has set up Sunderland-based Alcohol Brands to market and sell the range in the on and off-trades. Baby Blue is blueberry flavour and Baby Pink is citrus lemon. Both have 4 per cent abv.

"We are also looking at developing other drinks ranges which I hope will also come on line if Baby Pink and Baby Blue

are a success," Griffiths added.

Despite a declining RTD market, Bacardi-Martini's Bacardi Breezer Half Sugar saw a massive 126 per cent sales surge in the year to Dec 2006 - while its full-sugar sibling lost 24 per cent of its sales, according to Nielsen figures.
